Performance Anxiety: From Fear to Delight

Most guitarists play for none other than their own sheer pleasure.  There is indeed an element of connection that a musician feels to something greater than herself, no matter how new she is to the instrument.  A newcomer to the guitar usually feels incompetent, even awkward, as she struggles to master the basics.  She therefore has no desire to play for others.  After the player, however, begins to master a few pieces, becoming more fluent in the guitar’s unspoken language, she begins to think, “Perhaps it would not be so bad to play for others.”   She may want to perform just for fun, or, conversely, she may be entranced by her passion for the instrument, so much that she wants to make a career out of playing music.  When a guitarist thoroughly enjoys the music that she plays, there is a natural tendency to share her enthusiasm.  Moreover, there is a tremendous value in sharing that most musicians experience.  The value is that the enjoyment of playing for others is greater than simply playing for oneself, because enjoyment is multiplied when shared with others.  Of course, that experience goes best when the player is well prepared, when she is healthy, and the performance goes well. Then everyone - including the player - feels uplifted and energized by the experience.

That experience turns near-spiritual when the entire audience becomes focused on the music and acts as one large, harmonious unit.  Listening to beautiful, well-performed music gives people a glimpse into a higher realm, giving them a spiritual lift. The beauty of the music takes them outside of themselves, at least for a moment, and thus helps them let go of their everyday problems.  Performed well, your music can have a profound impact on your listeners.
